What Is a CoC, Anyway?
If you own a gas installation in South Africa, you've probably heard about a Certificate of Compliance (CoC). But what is it really? Simply put, a CoC is your proof that your gas installation is safe, legal, and compliant with the latest standards – including SANS 10087-1:2024 and the Pressure Equipment Regulations (PER). And don't forget the mandatory 5-year gas safety inspection on all gas installations.
Think of it as your gas system's ID card. Without it, you're not only running a safety risk, you're also exposed legally and financially.

Why the Law Requires It
According to the Occupational Health and Safety Act (No. 85 of 1993) and South Africa's gas safety regulations, all fixed LP Gas installations must have a CoC. This includes:
- New installations (indoor and outdoor)
- Any modification or extension of an existing installation
- Property transfers (yes, you'll need one when selling your home)
Only a SAQCC Gas-registered installer can issue a CoC. Anything else is invalid. (LPGSA)
What Happens If You Don't Have One?
No CoC = big risks:
- Insurance problems: Most insurers reject claims if the installation has no valid CoC.
- Legal issues: Non-compliance can lead to penalties.
- Safety hazards: Without professional checks, leaks or explosions are far more likely.
In other words, the piece of paper could save you from a very expensive mistake.
